“Now I’m off to the races, Cases of Bacardi chasers, Chasin’ me all over town”…Lana Del Rey
How many of you lovelies have been to horse races? Did you like it? Well, my dears, last weekend was my first time…and did I like it? Oh no..I loooved it! I mean, what is not to love? You get to dress up pretty, you wear classy hats, drink bubbles I mean at least that’s what I did when I went with my girlies to the Thirsk races!
Thirsk race course is a very lovely small to medium sized venue with a very warm family atmosphere. The place is full of lovely historical buildings surrounded by loads of greenery. The sun was shining on that day making the surroundings even more picturesque. And did you know the race course is over 200 years old?
The food at Thirsk races was exquisite. The burgers were of a really
high standards and they were so tasty, I even had two…and they were huuuge! We also indulged
in some donuts (’cause a girl needs her dessert)…with toppings…and a cream…upps!
And I know some of us even took a second helping!
Coming closer to the actual day, the most important question came out! “What shall I wear to the races?” I had few options in my mind but I waited for the day to decide on the final winner. I know we girls try to wear a new dress every time we go to a wedding or races. Nevertheless, I recycled this number I’d worn back in spring to a very special occasion – my friends wedding. Read all about the wedding guest outfit here. It’s strange how much a hat can change the whole outfit, don’t you think?
Shape-wise, I tend to opt for A-line mid-length dresses as they are always a flattering option, creating a small waist illusion. I also found the mid-length hem lines dresses perfect for those events with a strict-ish dress code.
I paired this Oasis dress with a pink BHS hat which I think picked up the colours in the prints of the dress very well. The hat was the perfect accent to my white-ish dress. In regards to my accessories, I went for a Monsson beige clutch and a pair of Next platforms in nude. Why do I prefer to wear platforms to the races? They don’t sink into the grass, making it easy for me to move around! The colours of my accessories were pretty neutral as I wanted the dress and the hat to become the centrepiece of the whole racing outfit.
As you can see, we were just a bunch of girls at the races having a lot of fun and even though we did drink a lot of bubbles, we did maintained our dignity throughout the whole event. It’s good to have fun but it’s not fun to be one of the girls that lies on the ground showing their knickers to everyone around. I did even placed a few bets myself but since I’m not one to really understand the game, I lost every time. But then again, picking a winner by cuteness of the name is not the best approach, is it?!
Thirsk races offered us a very warm welcome and I certainly will be back next year. Maybe I’ll take my man next time, so he can advice me on the best horses.
What is your the outfit of your choice when you go to races? Do you tend to go all out or do you settle for something more toned down like me?
